Why is the comforter so important for baby? What is it for?

This object has several functions.

The comforter is important for baby because it allows him:

• To better cope with the anxiety of separation;

• To fall asleep well;

• To console oneself;

• To grow by acquiring more autonomy.

The comforter is often a baby essential to support difficult times such as the first times you have to separate. His blanket is a physical presence that replaces you. Psychologists speak of the cuddly toy as a “transitional object”.

Be careful though because baby must not become dependent on his cuddly toy. It's up to you to set limits so that he doesn't constantly ask you for it.

What is a good baby comforter? There is no “good” or “bad” choice of comforter as long as you let your baby choose it. No need to force him in his choice. If your baby decides to make an old t-shirt or a teddy bear into an object that he will take everywhere with him, it is because he feels the need. It's his blanket. Be careful, however, with CE standards, even if he will not set his sights on an object made from a material that could irritate his little skin. Babies choose objects that are soft and pleasant to handle.

The more the comforters are left lying around, the more they take on the smell of parents and the house. These familiar scents help baby to better tolerate separations, annoyances or fatigue. If you find that the cuddly toy deserves a cleaning, warn your baby before putting the cuddly toy in the washing machine. The smell of laundry could be experienced as a betrayal...

Until what age can baby have his comfort blanket? There is no age limit for having a cuddly toy, if it was used as a transitional object. The need for one fades over time, around the child's 6th birthday. Some keep it until they are 10-12 years old. Other babies keep their cuddly toy all their lives as a souvenir from their childhood.

Now you know.
